If I Die Infinity War Funny
The movie of the year, for the ignoramus I refer to Avengers : Infinity War, is just 4 weeks away. The countdown has begun and with the 2nd trailer out recently the world is on the edge of it's seat. Kevin Feige, one of the key figures behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has told us that within the first 5 minutes we will see just how badass a villain Thanos is. This has left fans wondering whether any of the key characters gets the axe. It is general consensus that at least one Avenger will die by the time this movie is over. There are many guesses and theories doing the rounds and here are some of my prime contenders for martyrdom (Please note that this is not in any particular order).
Captain America
MCU's golden boy Chris Evans is number one on most people's doom list. Don't get me wrong. It's not that no one likes him, it's the opposite in fact. Cap is one of the most beloved Avengers and hence his loss will probably hurt the others most. Killing him will be a severe blow to all the Avengers. Remember Kevin Feige's statement.
"You know, we've been teasing Thanos since the very first 'Avengers' film. Remember the end of 'Avengers,' the very end of the movie he turns around in the chair and you realize something bad is coming. We've been teasing him for years and the trick is when you tease something for that long you have to deliver. So, within the first five minutes of 'Infinity War' people will understand why Thanos is the biggest and baddest villain in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
Take into consideration the fact that Evans has being trying for a while to step away from playing the character (or so sources say). There is also the fact that his contract is over with Avengers 3 and 4. When confronted with the rumors about him being done with the First Avenger he said,
"Well, you know, my contract is over, so that's as far as I know."
As reported by the Hollywood Reporter he has also said,
"You want to get off the train before they push you off."
If he will miss playing the role of Cap, he firmly told Entertainment Tonight,
"[I'll miss] everything [about Captain America], I mean, it's not just the character, it's the people – the experience, such good movies, such wonderful memories. I'll miss a lot."
In the comics it is true that Cap does die and one of the candidates who has then donned the mantel is Bucky Barnes or the winter soldier as he is known. Whether the Russo brothers will stick with this is as of now unknown.
Iron Man
Also on the Doom list is Iron Man. The reasons for this are very similar to those of Captain America. Tony Stark has been a major character in the MCU ever since he kicked it off with Iron Man in 2008. Now he plays a sort of father figure or mentor to Peter Parker a.k.a. Spiderman. He is also seen to be struggling with the consequences of his actions which can be seen in Civil War. Speculation is rife, particularly after those scenes in the trailer, that Tony Will die a heroic death trying to save Peter Parker. Furthermore there is the scene where Thanos is supposedly beating the crap out of (this is pure conjecture) Tony Stark while saying, "I hope they remember you."
Now, add to the fire this particular statement by the man, RDJ himself saying,
"It's this cyclical thing. I could have said when the first 'Avengers' came out: 'It's never going to get any better than that. Everybody stop'. But to me it's always about people and opportunities, like the ['Avengers' directors Anthony and Joe] Russo's, who I adore."
"Everyone says to me it's like a glove that fits so well. I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base," he explained. "I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [MCU movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it's embarrassing."
– Australia's News.com,
Robert Downey Jr. is currently the highest paid actor on Marvel's roster. He is being paid a whooping $200 million for his role in Avengers 3 and the law of movies states that his price will only go up not down. I mean this guy is being paid something that amounts the entire price of making and marketing a big budget movie. Will Marvel be able to afford such a price despite the fact that he is the MCU's favorite and most profitable character. There is also the rumor that RDJ's contract ends with Avengers 4 despite there being talks of an Iron Man 4. Maybe they will extend his contract as they have done in the past.
Loki
The last we saw of our favorite villain was that he was aboard a space ship along with his brother (FYI Thor) and the rest of the Asguardians. There are 3 factors alluding to Loki's eminent demise (Please lord almighty, don't let them kill Loki).
- From the Thor : Ragnarok post credit scene, we know that the Asguardian's ship has come across Thanos' spaceship
- We later see Thor floating in space sans a space ship and being picked up by the Guardians of the Galaxy.
- In the trailer we see Loki handing over the Tessaract which he swiped from Odin's vault to presumably Thanos.
Loki is top on the list of casualties. Remember Loki once worked for Thanos. Thanos had given him the scepter with the mind stone and the Chittauri army to conquer Earth. In this regard he failed miserably. There is no doubt that this has angered Thanos. After all he is being guarded by the Black Order. Just a thought but the scene where Thanos is crushing Thor's skull is where Loki in a final redeeming act gives up the Tesseract and dies to save Thor. Or maybe Thor is watching Loki die. Anything is possible. I suppose we'll just have to see.
Vision
Another prime candidate is Vision. He'e a new member of the Avengers. He's high on my list coz he carries the mind stone on his forehead. As it is one of the infinity stones Thanos no doubt wants it and will try to extract it from Vision's head. We see glimpses eluding to this is the trailer where we see Corvus Glaive using his staff to remove it from Vision's head. Whether he survives this or not, we do not know. It's possible that Shuri (T'Challa's smart ass little sister), finds a way to save him. After all it is assumed that they try to hide Vision in Wakanda. Where else can you hide some one who doesn't want to be seen or tracked by a megalomaniac. All cards down Vision is a prime suspect to bite the dust.
Pepper Potts
A relatively far chance is Pepper Potts. She basically has not much to do in the movies except be Tony Star's love interest. How else can Thanos hurt Iron Man but by killing the woman he loves. It would tear Tony apart. I must admit it's a long shot, but it's possible.
Hawkeye
The major reasons that factors in adding Hawkeye to my list is that he is nowhere on the promotional artwork for Infinity Wars though he is included in the list of cast and crew. You could say the same about Paul Rudd (Ant-man). The main distinguishing factor is that Paul Rudd is the lead in Ant-man and the Wasp that releases only in July this year. Hawkeye also does not have a standalone film in the making. So why have an Avengers movie starring Hawkeye (who b.t.w. is a member of the original team) and not have him on any of the posters or artwork? Also take into consideration that Hawkeye is an ordinary human with no special suit like Iron Man, who fights people with the strength of the Gods with a freakin' bow and arrow. One may argue that he has a family to take care of. This however makes him a candidate ripe for the killing. It sort of raises the stakes of the movie. We must however take things with a grain of salt. Maybe he is just sent off on another mission to, for example, recruit Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), and hence doesn't have screen time worthy of a poster credit.
Drax the Destroyer
Let's not take into account the Guardians of the Galaxy. Of all the Guardians if I had to pick one I'd say Drax the Destroyer is most likely. This is because he is the one among the GotG who has least narrative purpose. His main goal in life is to avenge the death of his family who died at the hands of Thanos. So basically once Thanos is defeated he has accomplished his goal. Why would he continue as a Guardian? I also don't see Star-Lord, Gamora or Rocket Raccoon dying. They already tried killing Groot so what's the point in doing it again, Anyway Rocket Raccoon and Groot were made to be a team. Not to mention Groot probably sells the most merchandise. If it is Drax who will die he deserves to do so avenging his family in a heroic way and I'm sure the Russo brothers will see to that.
As a matter of fact, it maybe that all the Avengers make it through. At the end of the day we don't know. So all we can do is sit tight and pray that time fast forwards till the 27th.
